Every system has a way of breaking, and the good ones break legibly. A fuse announces itself. A stuck valve hisses. The interface equivalent is rarer than it should be: most software fails silently, or worse, cheerfully.

What follows is a short taxonomy of failures I have found beautiful, and what each one taught me about the thing it belonged to.
